Abiola Ogunbiyi is a British Nigerian screenwriter based in London, U.K.

Formerly an actress and performer, she received a BA (Hons) Musical Theatre from ArtsEd London, working for over a decade on stage and screen. Her stage credits include the West End productions of Mamma Mia! and The Book of Mormon, and the world premiere of Girls by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko, as well as numerous shows across the U.K. and abroad.

Abiola made her screen debut in the Sky/Carnival Films series Jamestown, in which she appeared in seasons 2 & 3 as series regular Maria. She then appeared in the film adaption of Matt Haig’s A Boy Called Christmas (Sky Cinema/Netflix), and in the Channel 5 miniseries Deadline. Whilst acting, Abiola began writing and filming sketches and parodies; it was in the making of her comedy short Sexellence that Abiola committed to pursuing a writing career. Sexellence received awards and screenings at comedy festivals across the world, including Shoreditch House and Budapest’s Puskin Mozi.

As a screenwriter, Abiola was a finalist in the inaugural Netflix Screenwriters' Fellowship. In 2023, she was one of 9 writers selected for ITV’s Comedy Writers Initiative, which led to writing additional material for the ITV sitcom Piglets. Abiola was a member of 2023/24 BBC Scripted cohort, and her drama series The Heir was selected for the TorinoFilmLab SeriesLab 2024 program, winning one of the program’s two development awards.

Abiola has developed a murder mystery feature film with EbonyLife & Idris Elba’s 22Summers for Netflix, and her sci-fi short film RENO for Jam Tomorrow/Lux Aeterna is now in post-production.

Abiola has written a number of articles for leading U.K. casting directory Spotlight, and from 2019 - 2021 ran a platform and workshops promoting well-being in creative professions.
